In a strange bit of casting taken out of mid-to-late '90s in Saturday Night Live, comedian Will Ferrell has landed the role of a lifetime: he's playing President Ronald Reagan in a parody/satire about the infamous times about the late politician.

Variety reports that Ferrell is now attached to play the divisive late President in a film called Reagan, a historical parody that follows the politician at the start of his second term. In the story, Reagan falls into dementia, where "an ambitious intern is tasked with convincing the commander in chief that he is an actor playing the president in a movie," a wink to the politician's past as a Hollywood actor during the Golden Age.

Ferrell will star and produce the film through his own company, Gary Sanchez Productions. So far there's no director attached, but the Mike Rosolio screenplay, with Ferrell's involvement, is currently getting prepped to be shown around to get someone involved.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reagan was recently added to the Black List, the annual catalog of best unproduced scripts going around Hollywood. It became so popular that it prompted a live reading last month, which starred James Brolin, Girls creator Lena Dunham, Star Trek actor John Cho and Castle leading man Nathan Fillion.

While this would be the first time Ferrell plays a President on the big screen, he's no stranger to doing so in other mediums. Famously, he played President George W. Bush during his time on Saturday Night Live, later reprising the role in Broadway's You're Welcome America. Back in 2012, Ferrell also co-starred in the political comedy The Campaign.

Screenwriter Rosolio, on the other side, has worked in the past with shorter material, and Reagan is actually his first feature film screenplay. Other credits include working on NBC's Sean Saves the World, and the CBS Diversity Showcase.
