Ever since Sony Pictures struck a deal to have Spider-Man, played by young British actor Tom Holland, join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the complete terms of the agreement have been unclear: Who keeps creative control of Spidey on the big screen now? Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, recently spoke further about the terms of the deal -- and fans might breathe in relief.
Hey U Guys caught up with Feige during the London premiere of MCU Phase 3 opener Captain America: Civil War, and they asked the Marvel boss which of the two co-producing studios would be the one calling the shots creatively for next year's stand-alone Spider-Man: Homecoming -- and it's going to be Marvel!
"Amy Pascal, Tom Rothman, who runs Sony now, I've known for years. So, it's been great," Feige said, regarding next year's reboot of the franchise, the third in the past 15 years. "They really are supportive in allowing us to make the creative decisions to make [Spider-Man: Homecoming], but they've been great partners. So far so good on that movie."
Considering the way Sony had treated Spider-Man in the past few years (most recently with the lackluster The Amazing Spider-Man 2, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone), many fans were concerned the studio would be making creative decisions. It makes much more sense that Feige and the rest of the Marvel team would be the ones in charge, as they would have to make sure the character's story fits within the larger and growing MCU.
According to Blastr, during the same interview Feige also shared the reappearance of another franchise favorite: Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson since the first Iron Man film, up until last year's Avengers: Age of Ultron. While there are rumors the former director of SHIELD will return for Infinity War, it appears we'll see him in another movie before that -- could he join Holland and Robert Downey Jr. on Homecoming?
Holland makes his début as Spidey on next week's Captain America: Civil War, while Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7, 2017.
