Current Late Late Show host James Corden will be hosting the Tony Awards in just a few days, and the funnyman and actor, himself a winner of theater's most prestigious award, is celebrating his grand return to Broadway in a big way -- with "Carpool Karaoke." Joined by Hamilton megastar Lin-Manuel Miranda, Corden assembled a crew of legends to join forces for some showtune singing!
This coming Sunday night, Corden will be heading back to the Beacon Theater to host the biggest awards show in the world of theater, and he's bringing in the big guns for the night. In the latest episode of his popular sketch "Carpool Karaoke," the late night host had Miranda, Jane Krakowski, Audra McDonald and Jesse Tyler Ferguson in a car helping him get to the theater.
At the beginning of the video, Corden and Miranda are alone together on the car and the two obviously start singing tunes from Hamilton, including the first track "Alexander Hamilton" and the super-fast rap from "Guns and Ships," which is sung by Daveed Diggs in the musical as the Marquis de Lafayette. The track, the fastest rap ever to appear on Broadway, has become a challenge to learn for all "Ham Trash" -- and it turns out Corden can totally ace it!
This isn't the first time Corden has shown his love for Hamilton: a few months back, when former Tony Awards host Rosie O'Donnell visited The Late Late Show, the two of them sang the intro to "Alexander Hamilton" as they predicted the show would win a lot of awards this summer.
In any case, on this week's "Carpool Karaoke," once the rest of the Broadway squad is in the car, it's all theater geek loveliness from then on, singing showtunes from Rent, Jersey Boys and, of course, the grand finale: "One Day More" from Les Miserables, including one of those high notes only Broadway goddess Audra McDonald can deliver.
The clip is one of the sweetest, geekiest things any theater fan has ever seen, showing off five very talented people who are obviously truly in love with the career path they've chosen and are just excited to be there.
Besides the fun singing time straight out of a choir school bus, Corden also addressed Krakowski and Ferguson over their life juggling Broadway with TV shows (she's on Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and he's on ABC's Modern Family), asking them whether they preferred to be in theater or actually make money.
