Meryl Streep Channels Donald Trump in Tony-Worthy Impression for Public Theater Gala

Meryl Streep, the most Oscar-nominated actress in history and a legend in the craft, has just given the world a rare glimpse of her goofier side by playing arguably the most controversial figures in today's political scene: GOP presumptive presidential hopeful Donald Drumpf. Making a surprise visit at The Public Theater's gala last Monday, the Iron Lady gave a top-notch impression of Mr. Trump!

According to Variety, Streep showed up at the "Shakespeare in the Park" gala in last Monday, in full Drumpf disguise: red tie, fat suit, toupee-like hair and orange spray tan. She was joined onstage by her Into the Woods and Mamma Mia! co-star, Christine Baranski, who played Hillary Clinton and seemed to be having the time of her life just looking at Streep.

Streep and Baranski sang a number from the musical Kiss Me Kate, taken from a Cole Porter song called "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," traditionally sung by men advising others on how to impress women by reciting the works of William Shakespeare. This made for hilarious results when it came down to these actresses playing the two politicians, while Baranski/Clinton sang that by declaiming "a few lines from Othello" the ladies would think he's a "hell of a fella."

Of course, as it has happened with every Streep performance in the past four decades, critics poured their support on her: The New York Times called the Central Park performance a "more than credible version" of Drumpf, "down to the pursed lips and low-hanging belly," also praising her "braggadocio-inflected voice" as she did a singing number with Tony Award-winning Baranski.

Streep became a trending topic on Twitter following the performance, with fans all over the world asking her to make the performance a regular thing; unfortunately, the Devil Wears Prada actress later issued a press release saying it had been a "one-off, a once in a (last in a) lifetime appearance of this character."

The theater night had some of the biggest names in entertainment in attendance, including Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda, legendary actress-singer Bette Midler and Oscar winner Kevin Kline, among many others including former mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, as crowds understandably had a blast watching Streep play the often-controversial billionaire-turned-politician.
