Just as Broadway smash Hamilton was taking home 11 Tony Awards last Sunday, Netflix released one of the funniest ads in its history, getting Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt character Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess) to audition for the title role in the hip hop musical -- and failing in the most hilarious and Titus-like way.
To mark the occasion of the biggest night in American theater, Netflix released a clip of Burgess in character as the politically incorrect and beautifully voiced Titus.
On the tape, a DIY-type of ordeal, Titus talks to the camera to audition for the role of "rapping Alexander Hamilton," though he admits he couldn't get any material for the show and hasn't been able to get tickets to it -- it seems even fictional characters struggle to afford tickets for the hottest show on Broadway.
Obviously completely unfamiliar with the cast album that has obsessed millions, Titus still confidently says he thinks he gets it, then proceeding to freestyle, singing with the $10 bill with the Founding Father in his hand. By the end, he also adds a little spunky windy hair ... to his wig in character.
Netflix also released a great video of behind-the-scenes outtakes of the making of the video that every fan of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt should definitely check out.
Of course, even though the lyrics and even the concept are all wrong, it's always a pleasure to get another clip from Titus Andromedon, who obviously also took the time to show off his mad singing chops.
While his character has been trying to make it in Broadway for years, Burgess is a veteran in the world of musical theater, having been part of Guys and Dolls, Jersey Boys, Good Vibrations and even originating the role of Sebastian in The Little Mermaid.
In his role as Titus Andromedon, Burgess has already gone viral a few times, most notably with the first season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, as the character created a self-promotional (and very absurd) video entitled "Peeno Noir" that later became a smash on YouTube. The cast of another Netflix hit, Orange is the New Black, honored Titus a few months back, with their own version of "Peeno Noir."
The second season of the show included a whole lot more singing, delving more into the musical genre, and it might be because Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt co-creator Tina Fey is currently writing a musical with her husband, based on her 2004 cult film Mean Girls.
