It seems season 4 of Orange Is the New Black, which will be available starting this weekend, will very much revolve around the Latina inmates -- and that means bringing in arguably the most famous Spanish-speaking meme as well. Itatí Cantoral, most famous for her role as evil villain Soraya Montenegro in the classic Thalia telenovela Maria la del Barrio, is making an appearance -- in character!
Speaking to Mexican magazine Excelsior, Cantoral revealed that Netflix had called her up for a series of promotional ads revolving around the fourth season of OItNB, placing the character in Litchfield prison over her many crimes in the soap opera.
"It's incredible! Because they are going to put the most important Mexican villain, Soraya, in jail. They are going to adapt the role to the series tone and will make her a murderer," said Cantoral, as translated by Latin Times. "I am very excited. Because this character, that everyone is calling an icon, has become a social media phenomenon thanks to 15 and 16-year-old kids that didn't even watch the telenovela but know who she is because of the memes."
At least two big memes have come out of the character: one, best known within the Spanish-speaking community in and outside Latin America, has Soraya calling someone "maldita lisiada" ("damn cripple"); the other one, more popular in the English-speaking online community, sees Soraya crying with the audio-descriptive subtitle reading "cries in Spanish."
The "maldita lisiada" scene, one of the most infamous in the history of telenovelas throughout the Spanish-speaking world, sees Soraya Montenegro (Cantoral) catching her wheelchair-bound stepdaughter Alicia (Yuliana Peniche) getting a kiss from Nandito (Osvaldo Benavides), the son of title character Maria la del Barrio.
After witnessing this scene, Soraya proceeds to completely flip out and start hitting everyone around, including the poor girl in the wheelchair -- there's a full explanation of the scene right here, in case you want to imbue yourself with the worst (and possibly funniest) bit of melodrama in the history of Mexican television.
Now, at the end of Maria la del Barrio, Soraya is killed as dramatically as she lived, being burned to death, but if she's to be revived in any form, what better way than as a Litchfield inmate?
It's been over 20 years since Soraya Montenegro made it to the small screen for the first time in Televisa, but worldwide syndication has made the melodrama persist in the years since the story ended.
