Ricky Gervais' most recent film Special Correspondents was bashed by critics, but that doesn't mean the very politically incorrect British comedian is about to give up on the streaming site. He is now delivering the spinoff to his most successful work: a spinoff to his The Office movie will be reaching Netflix shortly after it lands in theaters!
According to Variety, the four-time Golden Globe Awards host recently appeared on the Opie with Jim Norton Show to talk about his latest film, The Office spinoff David Brent: Life on the Road, and he revealed the major streaming site has already acquired rights to the movie.
"This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I'm going to say it now. Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again," the comedian said on the show. "Which is great for me, because I'd rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas, do you know what I mean? Because I want to do tours off the back of it. So for me, it's great."
The movie spinoff starring Gervais, which was also written and directed by him, has the same documentary crew from the original show following his character, David Brent, as he pursues his longtime dream of becoming a rock star. It'll reach theaters in the United Kingdom on Aug. 19, co-financed between BBC Films and eOne. So far there's no date on when the film will reach Netflix, though Gervais later tweeted that fans could expect the film to be available on the service in 2017.
So far, Netflix has failed to confirm Gervais' claims that they've picked up his movie.
A couple of months ago, Gervais released his first film with Netflix, Special Correspondents, which he wrote, directed and co-starred in with alongside an all-star cast that also included Eric Bana, Vera Farmiga and America Ferrera. Upon its release last April, the film was panned by critics, and it holds a dismal 13 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and 36 percent on Metacritic.
Gervais' The Office, which also starred Sherlock's Martin Freeman, ran for two six-episode seasons and two 45-minute Christmas specials. It has turned into one of the major British TV exports, prompting a number of adaptations all over the world, including the popular American one starring Steve Carell and John Krasinski. There are also versions in Germany, France, French Canada, Chile, Israel and Sweden.
