With Warner Bros. bringing their big guns to the San Diego Comic-Con later this month, it's no surprise to see they're already launching the first details about their upcoming films, including the first-ever solo Wonder Woman movie 85 years after the character was created. Recently, the film's screenwriters were revealed -- and the DC CCO Geoff Johns was one of them.
It's been a while since Wonder Woman wrapped production, and, while it's rare that the screenwriters of a film are announced so late in the game, it seems DC and Warner do not care about convention on these matters on the slightest. According to io9 Gizmodo, it has been revealed that the script for the film was co-written by Johns, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice writer/director Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg, whose past credits include work with DC, Marvel and episodes of Gilmore Girls and Scandal.
Johns, on his part, is the top of the creative team at DC these days, serving as the company's Chief Creative Officer. He's been involved in writing a number of things about DC characters, including multiple published comic books as well as episodes of Smallville and, most recently, The Flash; even more interestingly, he's currently working with Ben Affleck on a screenplay for the upcoming Batman solo film within the DC Extended Universe.
When it comes to Snyder's involvement in the Wonder Woman screenplay, not everyone is necessarily thrilled with the news. While it was clear the filmmaker would be part of the movie somehow because he's overseeing the Justice League universe, his treatment of DC characters in the past few films (namely, Man of Steel and this year's Dawn of Justice) has left some fans unsatisfied, with many claiming Snyder doesn't necessarily respect canon and personalities for some of the most beloved superheroes from the DC Universe.
"Wonder Woman hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins," reads the official synopsis for Wonder Woman, via Screen Rant. "Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers...and her true destiny."
