This year marks the grand return of the Harry Potter world, with the J.K. Rowling-penned Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hitting theaters later this year and the Cursed Child play currently on previews on London's West End -- but there might be some more magic on the way. Warner Bros., who produced all eight Harry Potter films, just made a move for the sequel's adaptation rights!
Blogger Brian Conroy recently unveiled that Warner applied to trademark Cursed Child, after producing the entire Harry Potter film series and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie. While this doesn't necessarily mean Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be hitting theaters right away, the studio's definitely covering its bases just in case.
Not only did Warner trademark the possibility of a movie in the U.K., but also merchandise ranging from discs, telephones, computer games, downloadable content and a broad array of things.
The Independent reached out Rowling's reps and they said the whole thing was a formality at this point, but considering the show has been sold out for months and it's the official sequel to one of the most popular franchises in recent times, the idea shouldn't be scraped. There's also the possibility of a filmed version of the stage play hitting the big or small screen at some point.
Still, how great would it be to see Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint reprising the roles that turned them into child superstars back in 2001's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone?
While a film adaptation hasn't been confirmed so far, the script for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will be available to fans of the saga all over the world, even if they cannot attend the actual West End play. The script book, written by Jack Thorne from an original story co-authored by him, Rowling and John Tiffany, will hit bookshelves and online retailers on Harry's birthday, July 31, turning into the official eighth installment of the saga about the boy wizard, now grown up.
"It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn't much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children," reads the official Cursed Child synopsis. "While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places."
