Well "Gleeks" it looks like there is reason to celebrate. Fox's hit show "Glee" has officially been renewed for two more seasons. There were some concerns with just a few more episodes left in season 4 and no news on a fifth season that there may have been trouble with negotiations, but now "Glee" will be back for a season 5 and season 6. The show will now be airing through at least 2015.
With just three more episodes left in season 4 and the finale set to air May 9, time was running out for an announcement to be made on a new season. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the hit comedy musical series may not even be done after season 6 either. It looks like Fox will reevaluate the show around season 6 and consider picking up the series for more seasons.
"Glee" has been immensely popular since first airing in 2009. The show has had some controversial points, touching on timely topics, like their recent season 4 episode "Shooting Star" which featured a school shooting just months after the Newtown Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. Season 4 has featured major guest stars such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, and Katey Sagal. According to EW, the show is averaging 8.7 million viewers and a 3.6 rating among adults 18-49.
Fox's entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly praised the show amid news of "Glee" being renewed for two more season. Via EW, Reilly said, "Glee debuted as the first and only successful musical comedy series on television, and more than four years later, it continues to defy genres, break new ground and have a significant impact on popular culture." Reilly went on to say, "Week in and week out, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, Dante DiLoreto and the entire Glee team deliver a series that not only delights and surprises fans, but also inspires them to talk about, share, debate and engage with the show - and I'm absolutely thrilled to have them on board for another two seasons."
