When the lay man said that "Let a Man Practice the profession which he best knows" they probably were talking to people like Kodak. After a long unabridged period of success in the cameras domain, Kodak decided that it's time to venture into something more sophisticated. They decided to build smartphones, with the hope of using their long experience in photography, to make phones that can actually out do High-grade DSLR cameras.
At first the idea sounds completely viable and innocent, but after digging a little bit deeper to know why such a big company would want to be in the smartphone's industry, you realize that Kodak must have noticed how fast smartphone cameras were advancing. The argument is that very soon digital cameras might be scrapped off by smartphones. AFR (Australian Financial Review) ascertains that it's this nerve-wracking discovery that might have compelled Kodak to build their first smartphone (Kodak IM5) last year.
According to AFR, Kodak's big fall begun at the boom of Android smartphones and this explains why the company filed for bankruptcy some four years ago. This year, Kodak has launched yet another smartphone in collaboration with Bullitt, the Kodak Ektra. This phone takes after a 1941 Kodak camera which bears the same name. The Verge publishers claim that the Kodak Ektra will feature a 21 MP camera with a touch of Sony's image sensing technology (IMX230).
All other things in the phone are just the normal things we know in a typical smartphone. This includes 3 gigs of RAM, a MediaTek processor and 32 GB in internal storage. The phone however has a slight alteration in its design. Due to its fairly large camera, the back side is pretty much identical to your small digital pocket-camera. In fact if the two are placed with their back sides facing up, it's hard to tell that the Kodak Ektra is a phone.
The big blunder however that Kodak made when making this phone, is investing too much in the camera and leaving out all other factors. The phone might have the best smartphone camera in the market, but who would buy a $100 phone with an outrageous $500 price tag, just because of its camera?
