A "Van Helsing" film is currently in the works as confirmed by co-writer Jon Spaihts. The reboot will be unlike any other vampire movies and incomparable to Hugh Jackman's character in the 2004 "Van Helsing" movie. The new film will be set in modern times with "Mad Max" as its sole inspiration.
According to GameSpot, Spaihts spoke to Collider about this upcoming new movie. He said that it will not follow the previous "Van Helsing" movies. While it is still a character inspired from Bram Stoker's "Dracula," the movie will be set in the present. The vampire hunter will be witty and very skillful however the co-writer can only divulge so far. He also mentioned that as this new character comes to flight, he might also drop in some other Universal monsters cinematic universe movies as well.
Spaihts is working on the movie with Eric Heisserer who wrote for "The Thing" reboot in 2011 and for "Lights Out." He mentioned that their biggest inspiration on the new Van Helsing character mannerisms and behavior was the movie "Mad Max."
Movie News Guide mentioned that the new "Van Helsing" will have "encyclopedic knowledge" about matters of the undead. The movie news outlet speculated that he might use a smart phone or other modern technology to learn more about his enemies during his vampire hunting missions.
The only Universal monster universe movie with a confirmed premiere date is the "The Mummy." This will premiere on June 8, 2017 and is directed by Alex Kurtzman. Other titles that are still to be confirmed are Dr. Jekyl and Hyde with Russell Crowe playing Dr. Jekyll, "The Invisible Man" staring Johnny Depp and "The Wolfman" which is rumored to star Dwayne Johnson. More monster films will be released for April 2018 and February 2019.
