Iggy and the Stooges announced thier new album, Ready To Die, in February on the 40th anniversary of their 1973 proto-punk classic Raw Power. Now, the new music from the Stooges is finally here and can be streamed in full via NPR.
The 10-track retro blast clocks in at a miniscule 35 minutes and contains songs with titles like "Sex & Money", "Gun", "Burn" and "DD's." You shouldn't go into this album expecting art, but if you're looking for fun Iggy Pop has what you need. Actually, I'll let Iggy explain it.
"My motivation in making any record with the group at this point is no longer personal," Pop said in a video statement in February. "It's just a pig-headed f-ing thing I have that a real f-ing group when they're an older group they also make f-ing records."
"They don't just go and twiddle around on stage to make a bunch of f-ing money and then go 'Oh, it wouldn't be as good!' This is not the f-ing Smashing Pumpkins you know, we've got the bald guy and whoever. No. This is the key. It's the only thing I really have left to say. The Stooges are a real group."
This album marks the first time that Pop and Stooges' guitarist James Williamson have played together in 40 years. Williamson was responsible for the Stooges' definitive guitar work and last played on Raw Power. The original line-up disbanded after forcing a drug-ravaged Pop into rehab. Now they're back and you can have a listen at the first new music from the original Stooges in four decades.
The album proper will be released on April 30 via Fat Possum.
What do you think of Ready to Die? Will you be picking up a copy of Iggy Pop and The Stooges reunion album when it hits on April 30?
