Barcelona FC is easily the club team to beat in the world of international football. In the same respect, FC Bayern Munich is one of the most promising club teams. Today's matchup is sure to add to an already history UEFA Champions League tournament. Now that we are in the first leg of the semifinals, with the second leg being played on May 1, the last four teams will be whittled down to two and then one. What can we expect from Barcelona's and the sport's best player, Lionel Messi? Will Bayern be able to keep him under control?
It is widely known that German soccer is much different than Spanish soccer. On the one hand, Germany produces some of the most physically imposing players whereas Spain exports the sport's most technical athletes. This of course might be true, but there is no reason to focus on these stereotypes. Just in this tournament, both teams have shown an equal amount of both technicality and physicality. So do not base any outcome predictions on that.
The main issue is Lionel Messi. Barcelona's most valuable player hails from Argentina and is arguably the greatest player in the history of the sport. That said, over the last few years opposing teams have been able to deal with him enough to keep his score sheet down to a reasonable amount but he still manages to shine in every match. A hamstring injury report is threatening the 25-year-old's starting position for today's game, however he was warming up during yesterday's training session (pictured above). There have yet to be any official clearances for Messi, but if he gets onto the field Munich will need to be careful.
Munich is also missing Mario Mandzukic who is suspended for this match, and Holger Badstuber and Toni Kroos who are injured.
