In a recent convention, actor Michael Rooker was asked which role was more fun to play. Rooker gives a definite answer plus explains it to the fan.
He was given two choices: Guardians of the Galaxy's Yondu or The Walking Dead's Merle.
Joining the Guardians of the Galaxy Panel at the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest, Rooker said that while he had a lot of fun bringing Merle to life on TV, he had more fun being the blue-skinned leader of the Ravagers. Factoring in the fact that he didn't have to deal with rattlesnakes and ticks, he also mentioned that Yondu brought in more money for the actor.
Rooker did enjoy playing as someone with a knife for a hand, though, remembering the first time he wore the prop. During that time, while tying to wear his jacket, he accidentally stabbed the guy from the wardrobe department in the belly. He remembered it feeling as if he was stabbing a Pillsbury Doughboy. He also had some prop issues with Yondu, specifically his arrow. As Comic Book reports, while walking in costume, he found himself stuck someone else's wardrobe because of his arrow.
With all differences aside, there are similarities between the two roles. Both characters share a rough, rebel attitude on the outside, yet having a compassionate, big brother role in its core, as Cinema Blend points out. Yondu became the mentor of Peter Quill/Star Lord (played by Chris Pratt), taking him in his group and showed him how to live in a world not his own. Merle, on the other hand, while shown most of the time seen at the side of the Governor, still had a connection to his brother Daryl (played by Norman Reedus). Unfortunately, he becomes zombiefied and had to be finished off by his brother.
Scheduled for May 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 promises to bring back the characters fans loved during the first outing, while bringing in some new ones to expand the movie's universe.
