Tonight is "The Final Chapter" of FOX's hit crime thriller The Following, and not even the actors know how it will end. That is right - They filmed two endings for what is sure to be a suspenseful conclusion to the feud between Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and Joe Carroll (James Purefoy). So do last week's events give us a hint as to how this story comes to an end or are we still in the dark? (SPOILERS to follow)

With the death of Roderick in the previous episode and the fact that Claire stabbed Joe, "The End is Near" has us jump into a hectic storyline that can take any number of bad turns. Joe openly admitted to Ryan Hardy that he was going to kill Claire, but will he give him a chance to save her?

After trying to find the "Carrollism" compound, Hardy spots a suspicious area on a map (as if they never looked at this map before) and concluded that it must be the place. As usual, Hardy was right but the estate was empty except for a hanged "follower," Aaron.

So now Joe is on the run with Claire, Jacob and Emma. Also, Jacob is second-guessing everything to Emma's disappointment. So what do they do? They break into a house and take two hostages. Eventually the police come, Emma kills them, Claire stabs a woozy Joe in the same spot, and the hostages get away. Claire is caught again. Jacob is whining the whole time, too.

But where are the rest of the "followers?" Well, just like many of the episodes, we are introduced to two seemingly important cult members: Alex and Aimee. The former is basically in charge of this huge "Mask of the Red Death" plan whereas the latter gets the ball rolling by killing a reporter in front of the police station. Hardy finds out that something is going to go down at the makeshift emergency center, and boy does it ever. The "followers" create a diversion for Joe by murdering a bunch of innocent people. The FBI eventually stops it but Parker goes missing. As the show ends, we find out that she was kidnapped by this Alex character and is now being buried alive. Clearly we will see a "Telltale Heart" incident in the finale.

So Joe escapes on a boat with Claire and is going to kill her somewhere. Meanwhile Emma slits Jacobs throat. Good-bye Jacob; you started to get awesome but as soon as you started whining again you were killed off. Emma is heartless and might just survive into the next season.

The show's creator and showrunner, Kevin Williamson, revealed that tonight would end the feud between Joe and Ryan, but does not explain further. Everyone is in the dark with tonight's episode, including Joe Carroll - well the actor that plays him, anyway.

"I don't know exactly how the show ends," James Purefoy admitted about the finale.

"One of the great pleasures and one of the great frustrations working on the show has been the fact that you never quite know where you're going to go with this character - especially when you're playing somebody as completely mad as Joe Carroll."
