"The Expendables 4" is officially happening, as lead actor and producer Sylvester Stallone said on his Facebook account a few weeks ago. It will be the last film in the series and fans are excited to see which action stars will appear in the final movie. Not only that, Stallone wants to produce the TV version of his action film.
"The Expendables 4" will show something new and different
Stallone said, in a video he uploaded on Facebook, that the last film will give fans something different and exciting. According to Coming Soon, "The Expendables" in 2010 was such a hit during its first movie that it made $103 million domestically and $171 million internationally against a budget of $82 million.
Interest, however, decreased during the second and third movies. "The Expendables 2" in 2012 had an increase in budget, with $100 million. It tanked in domestic ticket sales, with just $85 million, but it was still a commercial success with international sales at $229 million. Meanwhile, "The Expendables 3" in 2014 was produced with a $90 million budget. It raked in $39 million domestically and $175 million in foreign sales.
Who will be part of "The Expendables 4" cast list?
There had been talks of producing a female-led cast after the dismal "The Expendables 3", although there haven't been any updates on that front. According to NME, there were also discussions about the film being adapted into a TV series, but that hasn't panned out either. Reportedly, the TV show would feature Tom Selleck ("Magnum P.I."), Kiefer Sutherland ("24"), Jennifer Garner ("Alias"), and Lucy Lawless ("Xena: Warrior Princess").
The TV project has not been officially canceled, but since "The Expendables 4" will be making its way to the silver screen soon, it will probably be shelved for a while. The fourth film's funding will largely come from China, which was the source of $200 million ticket sales for "The Expendables 3."
While there has been no official "The Expendables 4" cast list, it is a safe bet that Jason Statham will reprise his role as Stallone's right-hand man, best friend, and the team's resident dagger-wielder. Action icons like Hulk Hogan, Jackie Chan, and Pierce Brosnan have expressed interest in the last installment, but it is still to be seen whether they will appear in the last movie of "The Expendables" franchise.
Chan was approached for "The Expendables" 2 and 3, but he turned it down because he couldn't spend so much time in the United States. When Stallone approached him for the fourth film, the Chinese martial arts legend finally said, "Okay." Hulk Hogan, meanwhile, told Stallone his desire to star in the film and to work with Stallone again since "Rocky 3" in 1982.
