Did excited east coast fans spoil the season finale of the first season of FOX's hit show The Following? If not, then you are lucky, but that definitely happened last night according to the show's executive producer Marcos Siega. Whether or not it was spoiled for you, the final episode of the first season is definitely fresh in the minds of fans. Where does this conclusion lead for the already ordered second season, though? (SPOILERS to follow)
Before the finale aired on television, the cast and crew were at a special screening and only star Kevin Bacon confirmed his character's (Ryan Hardy's) return in the second season. So what does this mean? Here is a little hint from Bacon:
"Well, one thing that we've talked about is that we might jump time a little bit," Bacon revealed. "You might see a character (a Ryan Hardy) who is in a slightly different headspace than where he has been. When you meet my character at the beginning of this season, I'm drinking too much, I'm depressed, I'm a wreck. I don't know if that's going to be where I'm going to start. Who knows?"
As the finale, entitled "The Final Chapter," was airing, Siega was checking Twitter and noticed how some fans were tweeting a lot of spoilers.
"I was just reading all the tweets, because it's on right now," said Siega. "And I'm sitting there going, 'Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. They're saying everything.'"
But what exactly happened?
"The Final Chapter" opens where we left off the week before: Joe Carroll has Claire Matthews on a boat and plans to kill her. Meanwhile Ryan is looking for Claire AND a buried alive Parker. With only hours of air left, the FBI manages to follow some "pretty big breadcrumbs" left by Joe to track down Parker. They ID the man who kidnapped her, Alex, and arrest him. Then Hardy and Weston torture him until he gives up Parker's location.
Meanwhile, Joe takes Claire to a lighthouse where we are introduced to another character, Neil Meyer. But then Joe kills Neil to show Claire what murder is like and such.
As Weston and Hardy are on their way to Parker's burial site, she tells Ryan over the phone that if she dies it is not his fault. They find the site, but it is too late. Debra Parker is dead. Hardy then straight up kills Alex in anger. In Parker's tomb there is an envelope with Joe's manuscript inside. Hardy sets out to find Joe alone.
Hardy is on the track of Joe and is eventually greeted by Emma, who manages to drug him with the help of others. He wakes up in the lighthouse with Joe and Claire. After a brief lecture (classic, Carroll), Hardy and Joe fight, the lighthouse ends up ablaze, and Ryan escapes with Claire. Joe is inside and assumed dead. The FBI confirms this with dental records.
So Claire and Ryan are safe back at his place until Molly (who is a "follower" and was promised the chance to kill Hardy) comes in and stabs the survivors. The episode ends.
Do you think Joe is really dead? Who will be returning next season and where will it pick up?
