Microsoft's HoloLens VR has only just sold several thousand units since it was released last year. While virtual-reality game gadgets are still expensive, it's an interesting niche that's bound to gain more traction in the upcoming months or years. Meanwhile, one tech-inclined fan decided to merge augmented reality with Harry Potter, which might just rival Pokémon GO someday.
Augmented reality gadgets and games are trickling down the entertainment and tech industries. Companies are doing it slowly because it's not an inexpensive gamble, but it's worth it when people who play Pokémon GO will risk life and limb (and money) to catch some monsters on their streets.
When this game was introduced, other people wanted to see a different world. They wanted a Harry Potter GO! Well, one tech geek did just that. Asad Malik is a Bennington College student and AR designer, who goes by the name 1RIC. According to UploadVR, Malik is pursuing a degree in augmented reality, since his college allows students to design their own academic program.
He is designing a HoloLens VR app to bring the Harry Potter world into the augmented reality industry. He says it will be like the "YouTube of augmented reality". There are already three spells in the Harry Potter AR experience: Incendio, Patronus, and Wingardium Leviosa.
It takes a physical wand and the user's own voice to make the spells work so it really feels like being inside the Harry Potter world. It is a lot of fans have been wanting. Malik is still working on it but he says that it would be ready by the end of January.
Meanwhile, the HoloLens costs as much as $4,000, which is why only a few own it. Roger Walkden, head of the HoloLens commercial department, told The Inquirer that it was enough for them since they were never planning to sell hundreds of thousands anyway. He said that Microsoft has further plans for the gadget, although they can't be divulged yet.
Walkden further said that there will be future versions of the gadget. With ideas like Malik's Harry Potter AR game, AR devices will certainly become a hit in the future. The high price tag will certainly hinder HoloLens from getting a mass production in the millions but technology is ever-changing and a lot of ideas can still crop up in the months to come.
