The Great Gatsby soundtrack got another addition today with the release of "Crazy In Love." Emeli Sande and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra turn Beyonce's anthem into a horns-filled 20s blast.
The piece of old-timey music made from current pop culture is essentially Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann's career in a nutshell (and unlike some of Luhrmann's movies, it actually works). Don't expect music lovers and casual listeners to get all up in each other's faces on this one like they did for Beyonce and Andre 3000's cover of "Back To Black." This one's a jam.
Emeli Sande sounds like a Beyonce impersonator throughout the verses before transitioning into a frantic, breathy chorus that she makes her own. The instrumentation, courtesy of the Bryan Ferry Orchestra, fits so well with the melody of "Crazy In Love" that if you saw a band performing a similar cover on YouTube, you'd wonder why you hadn't thought of it.
I'd go so far as to say "Crazy in Love" is winning the soundtrack as of right now, followed by Sia's "Kill and Run." Lana Del Rey turned in a passable song. Beyonce and Andre had a lot of buzz, but their song fell flat. The xx were just boring and the less said about the Fergie song, the better.
While the jury will be out until May 7 when The Great Gatsby soundtrack is released (or I hear the Florence + The Machine track, whichever comes first) but put this Beyonce cover by Emeli Sande and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra on the title card as a contender.
What do you think of Emeli Sande and the Brian Ferry Ochestra's cover of "Crazy In Love"? What is your favorite song from The Great Gatsby soundtrack so far?
