"Sherlock" Season 5 renewal remains unconfirmed although season four has ended. In recent reports, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and showrunner Steven Moffat have shared their opinions whether or not the upcoming installment will take place.
When "Sherlock" hit its final episode of season four fans have been worrying that it might be the last time they see Cumberbatch and Freeman as a duo. Judging from the busy schedule of its lead actors, it's almost impossible for "Sherlock" to be renewed for another season, although fans are hoping that the Baker Street Boys will return. The series creator, Steven Moffat, shares the same opinion with fans.
The genius behind "Sherlock" said that he still wants the show to continue, but it's still possible that they might have actually ended it given the fact that season four ended without a huge cliffhanger like any other previous installment. "If this is the last time, and I'm not planning on it to be, but it might be. It's still possible that we could end it," said Moffat as reported by Independent.
Even though Moffat loves to continue on "Sherlock", he worries about dragging the story a bit too far, according to The Telegraph. Back in July, Moffat has hinted that that season four would be the end of the series although he remains to be optimistic until now. Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch also has no idea about the future of the series. The actor said that there might not be another season of "Sherlock" since he's very busy with his schedule, although he would love to play the high-functioning-sociopath again.
Cumberbatch, just like Moffat, still remains optimistic about the series. However, Martin Freeman prefers to look at the reality and urges fans to stop asking for what's next. Despite all of the uncertainty surrounding "Sherlock" Season 5, BBC still keeps the door open. A source from BBC reveals that the series won't be back until next January, but the source said it's "reasonably hopeful" for the series to make a comeback.
