Oscars 2017 is still months away, but the movie world is already buzzing. That is because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the body that awards the most coveted Oscar trophy, has already released the full list of nominees for 24 categories.
Over the past few months, different film groups pored over many titles from 2016 that they would submit to the Academy, wrote CinemaBlend. The resulting list of titles the award-giving body is considering led to signs of disappointment as well as shrieks of delight. But most of the titles that moviegoers and critics alike acclaim made it for consideration this Oscars 2017. Some titles that have already ran away with plenty of awards from other film organizations also landed in one or more categories.
So it would come as no surprise to film buffs that "La La Land", a musical starring Emma Stone (Mia) and Ryan Gosling (Sebastian), landed under 13 categories including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Runaway pop favorite "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is also being considered for Best Sound Mixing in Oscars 2017, a category that alien thriller "Arrival" is listed under too.
In the Best Actor and Best Actress categories, Casey Affleck ("Manchester by the Sea"), Andrew Garfield ("Hacksaw Ridge"), Meryl Streep ("Florence Foster Jenkins"), and Natalie Portman ("Jackie") are a few names among others that are in contention for the awards alongside other recognizable ones this Oscars 2017.
But aside from great works of fiction and biopics, hard-hitting documentaries are also the talk of town. There are five of them that are in contention for the Best Documentary Feature category, titles that Vox said are "unusually eclectic-and unusually urgent" as they tackle subjects such as race, autism, and the migration problem in Europe. Because of their content, they are somewhat "issue documentaries" already, as the online publication called them.
