Aerosmith have canceled a show in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta citing safety concerns. The cancellation comes in the wake of a recently discovered plot by terrorists to bomb the Myanmar Embassy in the city.
Ismaya Live, the concert promoter for Aerosmith’s south Pacific tour, said in a statement that the concert was being canceled due to safety reasons. It did not directly mention the bombing plot. Though Aerosmith apologized in the statement to the 15,000 fans who were preparing to see them, they made no mention of a make-up concert.
Indonesian police arrested suspected bombing plotters on Friday. Allegedly, the suspected terrorists were going to blow up the embassy to protest Myanmar’s treatment of Muslims.
Other high-profile acts have backed out of Indonesian performances before, mostly due to the presence of hard-line Islamic extremists in the country. Lady Gaga cancelled her Indonesian stop (the largest one on her “Born This Way Ball” tour) due to threats of violent protests from militant Muslims who viewed her as a corrupting influence.
Aerosmith’s Asia-Pacific tour has been wildly successful so far and has featured their first ever stop in New Zealand. Their next show is on Wednesday in the Phillipines.
