Google Chrome is the most widely used browser complete with a modern UI, ease of use, features and security. Google is working to tighten up the security in Google Chrome because of some recent malware attack.
Google has announced that it is working towards improving the protection of MacOS users as a part of its Safe Browsing program. Google has been restricting attempts to change Chrome settings on Windows PCs by malicious websites. The company is now working to bring those same restrictions to Chrome running on MacOS devices as a part of its effort to tackle malware. There are several ad-injectors that target Apple's desktop platform.
The users of Chrome on MacOS will start seeing more warning messages when they navigate to potentially dangerous websites that might risk users' security and privacy. These warning messages will also be applicable to potentially harmful software and files which the users download from the internet, reported ZDNet.
According to a blog post by Google, a new initiative called safe browsing will focus on two common cases of abuse of browsing experience that include unwanted add injection and modification of Chrome user settings, reported Neowin. "Users deserve full control of their browsing experience and Unwanted Software Policy violations hurt that experience," stated the company's post.
The Google's plan to counter malware for MacOS will include Chrome Settings API for Mac which arrived with Chrome 56 and the other component is Google's Safe Browsing technology that displays in-browser warnings when users attempt to visit a malicious website. Google also said that only those extensions that are hosted in the Chrome Web Store are allowed to make changes to the browser's settings.
The Settings Overrides API will allow extensions to override some selected settings in Google Chrome. The Chrome Settings API for Mac will be the only approved path for making changes to Google Chrome settings on MacOS. The API is being currently used on Windows PCs and Google introduced these restrictions for Windows in 2014.
This step will make MacOS much secure and will prevent the distribution of malware across various Mac PCs also. Safe browsing has been implemented on Android and Windows PCs and it's a welcome change for MacOS users also.
