"Suits" fans will be seeing more of Jessica Pearson in a potential spinoff series that will be shown on USA Network. Star Gina Torres recently closed a deal with Universal Cable Prods to work on a potential spinoff series starring her "Suits" character.
According to Deadline, the "Suits" spinoff series will be helmed by "Suits" showrunner/creator Aaron Korsh. The project, which is still in its early stages, will be based on the idea Torres pitched to Universal. Enthusiasm has been high for the spinoff project, and Torres stated that she "can't wait to get started."
"Gina had the idea and went to the studio. She pitched an idea of what happens if we follow Jessica into the future a little bit," Korsh explained the idea for the "Suits" spinoff. "She has a specific take on it that we're still mulling over right now. They were excited about it, I was excited about it, and we decided to move forward with thinking about what it is."
Torres' Jessica Pearson is one of "Suits" most popular characters, being the strong leader of the Pearson Specter Litt law firm. Torres exited the show in the middle of "Suits" Season 6, after she requested Korsh to write her off the show so that she can spend more time with her family, who are based in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Torres made a surprise appearance in the "Suits" Season 6 finale. In a dramatic hearing during which Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) fights to acquire license to practice law, Jessica flies in from Chicago to testify in favor of Mike and vouch for him. Ross got the unanimous vote need to acquire his license. He then agreed to go back to Specter-Litt on certain conditions: that he receives a big salary and a check for the legal clinic he had been working for after he got out of prison. He also wanted to get more freedom with the pro-bono cases he was going to take.
"The big moving forward thing that we try to set up is Mike is coming back to the firm and he's not just coming back as a fraud or as a consultant. He is now coming back as a full-fledged lawyer, so it gives us a chance to see what life is like in the new phase with him," Korsh told Deadline about the finale and how it will affect the show as it moves forward.
He revealed that "Suits" Season 7 will be a platform to explore more about the narratives of the individual characters, such as Donna and the path she would pursue in the next season. "Suits" Season 7 will be a start for all of the characters, and new beginnings will be the basic premise for the seventh outing.
