Fox's X-Men Cinematic Universe is still on the superhero genre race alongside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), with titles already scheduled for 2018 and beyond. The X-Men Cinematic Universe, however, is making one drastic change to the lineup by removing an element that they have been using since 2000's "X-Men."
It has been recently reported by IGN that the X-Men Cinematic Universe is working on "Deadpool 2," with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the Merc with a Mouth, and the X-Men spinoff title "New Mutants" at the same time for a 2018 release date. "Deadpool 3" has also been scheduled for the new franchise, as Fox is eyeing the franchise to be the next header for its X-Men Cinematic Universe. Other movies on the lineup include "Gambit," which reportedly has Channing Tatum as the titular role, the seventh installment of "X-Men", rumored to be the start of the Dark Phoenix trilogy, and another X-Men spinoff title, X-Force starring Cable and Domino.
While the titles appear to have diverse themes, one thing that the future X-Men Cinematic Universe titles will have in common is the absence of Professor X and Magneto, specifically their struggle with the mutants vs. humans. According to producer Shuler Donner, in her interview with Vanity Fair, the X-Men Cinematic Universe will not explore the Charles/Erik angle anymore, instead focusing on other stories that they could tell. Donner adds that although both are essential characters, skipping their power struggle between the two is both liberating and nerve-wracking. Donner has played and active part of X-Men Cinematic Universe, participating in casting and production of the X-Men Cinematic Universe movies.
This could also be seen in the TV shows Fox has tied into the X-Men Cinematic Universe. FX's "Legion" has been getting favorable reviews, while the planned X-Men TV series is planned without the professor and the master of magnetism in mind.
