‘Venom’ To Be Developed As R-Rated Film, Sony To Start Their Own Marvel Universe

Sony Pictures has reached an agreement with Marvel Studios to develop "Venom" as an R-rated film. Sony still owns the cinematic portrayals of "Spider-Man," "Venom" and other Marvel characters.

Sony recently announced a "Venom" standalone film to launch their own Marvel universe. The script for the upcoming film will be penned by Dante Harper ("Alien: Covenant") and it will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, Collider reported. Analysts say that this should keep Sony's budget modest and will likely emulate Fox's "Deadpool" and "Logan" in terms of production.

To clarify, Sony's Marvel Universe will be entirely different from that of "Spider-Man." In fact, it is not at all connected to the MCU but fans say that a crossover might be in place should "Venom" push through.

Unlike the films in Marvel, Kevin Feige will not be the one in charge for Sony Marvel films. Sony Entertainment Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman will be calling the shots. The positive development to adapt "Venom" in the movie screens likely means that the executives have already set their minds to push through with the film.

For the uninitiated, "Venom" or the "Venom Symbiote" is an alias used by several Marvel comic book characters who have been possessed by a parasitic alien entity in close association with "Spider-Man." The character was originally conceived as a villain but has since transitioned into becoming more of an antihero. Sony will likely introduce more "Spider-Man" characters in the upcoming film and is set to become a sci-fi horror flick, Comic Book Movie reported.

It is not yet clear whether Sony will tap the antihero or the supervillain side of "Venom" in its cinematic adaptation. However, fans are open for any possibility because an R-rating will leave a lot of room for creativity.
