Britain's Prince Harry of Wales started his 8-day tour of the United States this week, focusing on promoting the rehabilitation of wounded American and British troops. After landing in the nation's capital yesterday afternoon, the 28-year-old royal (and Captain in the Army Air Corps in the British Armed Forces) started his tour off right away by visiting a HALO Trust exhibit in Washington, D.C. His tour, which is set to end on the 15th of May, will also have the young prince visiting Colorado, New York and Connecticut.
During his HALO Trust exhibit visit at the Russell Senate Office Building, former Presidential candidate, Senator John McCain, accompanied Harry. The HALO Trust is associated with landmine removal, a cause that Harry's late mother Princess Diana championed. During the 30-minute exhibit tour, female staff members scrambles to catch a glimpse of the prince.
Senator McCain later said, "I'm sure it's not the first time he's seen that." the 76-year-old senator also said of Harry, "He was a very nice young man. He was asking in-depth questions."
After leaving the exhibit, Harry stopped by the White House for an event held by first lady Michelle Obama honoring military mothers and spouses. At this event, he helped children write special messages on military packages for their mothers. The first lady, who was surprised by Harry impromptu appearance, said, "We are absolutely thrilled that he could be with us today. He wanted to be here to personally thank you for your service."
Afterwards, Harry attended a special dinner for the HALO Trust at the British ambassador's residence in Washington.
Today, Prince Harry was decked out in his military uniform as he visited Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. He was there to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. The message written on a note with the wreath read:
"To my comrades-in-arms of the United States of America, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of freedom. Captain Harry Wales."
Later today, Prince Harry will visit the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as well.
