In case you didn't already know, people really seem to like Daft Punk's "Get Lucky." The first single off of their new album Random Access Memories snatched the world's attention via a teaser clip on SNL and hasn't let go ever since. The amount of remixes and covers the song has spawned more than validate its cultural relevancy, however, fans have expressed their feelings for the song in a much more important way: via their wallets. "Get Lucky" is currently sitting at the number 1 position on digital sales charts in 55 different countries. Fifty-five.
Worldwide, the single has sold more than 1 million copies according to the Wall Street Journal. A quick look at the official upload of the track on Vevo shows over 18 million views (that's not accounting for the countless iterations and "leaks" that have sprung up on YouTube.) On the day of its release, "Get Lucky" broke records on Spotify in the US and the UK for most streams in a single day.
The group had the following to say about "Get Lucky" in their track-by-track breakdown of Random Access Memories:
"Pharrell Williams sings this song: it was natural to invite our album. It is a born performer, complete, which produces a lot of elegance. It has not always had the opportunity to show he could be a great singer, so that we can include it in the pantheon of legendary performers. There is no imaginary line that separate the great artists of the past and present who are all worse than before. We wanted to give the impression of being in a capsule in the studio, isolated from the world. One can believe in 1978, but our idea is to travel this music in the present and in the future, see what happens and see if this enthusiasm is contagious."
RAM is due out May 21.
