Have you heard about the new movie "The Great Gatsby" starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan? Probably so, when considering all the press and promotion the movie built up over the last couple weeks. "The Great Gatsby" cast, including director Baz Luhrmann, made the media rounds making sure the movie becomes a box office success. Well the box office results from the movie's opening night Friday, May 10 have come in. According to Forbes, "The Great Gastby" earned $19.4 million at the box office on Friday.

The movie technically opened Thursday evening with some late shows, which pulled in $3.3 million according to Forbes. These numbers suggest Warner Bros. could be looking at $50 million for the movie's opening weekend.

The initial results are considered great for Warner Bros., whose movie was facing off against "Iron Man 3." Actually, "The Great Gatsby" failed to overtake "Iron Man 3" despite putting up great numbers. Despite opening in second, the $19.4 million is still considered a great number. "The Great Gatsby" reportedly cost just over $100 million to produce, so the studios are well on their way to making good on their investment. By the way, "Iron Man 3" pulled in $19.8 million on Friday.

According to Entertainment Weekly, it looks to be a two horse race at the box office this weekend. "Pain & Gain" came in third place on Friday with just $1.3 million, followed by "Peeples" and "42."

The reviews of "The Great Gatsby" have been all over the place. I have read and heard everything from fantastic to a big disappointment. However, whether it has gotten positive or negative reviews, there has been a big buzz surrounding Luhrmann's latest film. For Luhrmann, it looks like "The Great Gatsby" will become his most successful movie to date at the box office. In 2001, "Moulin Rouge" earned $57 million, which will likely be easily surpassed.
