Today on Facepalm News, Rapper Future claims that the controversy Lil Wayne's Emmett Till Lyric on the remix of "Karate Chop" brought awareness to the suffering of the slain teenager in a positive way. In case you missed it, Future thinks saying "beat the p**sy up like Emmett Till," referencing the brutal murder of an African-American teenager in 1955, is a learning experience.
In an interview with Power 106, Future said:
"I never thought it was going to get so much attention, but I think overall, the whole situation, he did bring light in a positive way to what happened. Even though they probably thought it was negative, he brought positive energy to the situation because a lot of people don't even know [who Emmett Till was]. My dad didn't even know who Emmett was, he think I was talking about Emmett Smith. I'm talking a lot of that are people around me, credible people, that should be like, 'Man, you don't even know who Emmett Till is?' He raised awareness to people who didn't even know Emmett Till. The young kids that never even knew what happened to him... I don't believe he in any way, form, or fashion did it out of disrespect toward the family."
Upon hearing the offending lyrics, the Till family called for Lil Wayne to be dropped by sponsor Mountain Dew.
Lil Wayne released an apology where he said "Moving forward, I will not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in my music, especially in an inappropriate manner."
The Till family called it "hardly an apology" and Lil Wayne was eventually dropped due to mounting pressure. After Wayne was dropped, the Tills released the following statement:
"Back in February, when I first heard the lyrics, I was in utter shock, disappointment and sadness. Just as Mamie Till Mobley didn't endure the pain of losing Emmett Till alone, many people have stood in solidarity with our family, even if it wasn't the most popular stand to take.
"The road less traveled is surely not the easiest but standing for your principles provides the endurance needed to fight for human and civil rights. This decision was monumental, we commend Mountain Dew for taking action towards better social responsibility, and now I finally feel that we can exhale and focus on our beloved Mamie Till Mobley's charge, "Let's get on with the business of positive thinking and livin."
