A brand new mother is now facing jail time after a night of heavy drinking while very pregnant resulted in the birth of her baby being born drunk. The baby girl, who was born about two weeks prematurely, is now in critical condition after being born with 2.9 grams of alcohol in her system. She is now in intensive care in Poland.
When the 38-year-old woman came to the Polish hospital, staff members called the police noting that she was visibly drunk. The woman apparently went into labor while having a night out on the town and then was taken to the hospital in the city of Tomaszow Mazowiecki.
A police spokeswoman said: "A blood test showed that the 38-year-old woman had a level of 1.2 grams of alcohol at the time of birth."
This amount of alcohol is equivalent to the amount in a bottle of wine or two liters of beer in an adult body. The effect of alcohol is intensified in infants, so the newborn was found to have around 2.6 grams of alcohol in her system according to police. In Poland, the blood-alcohol limit for drivers in 0.2 grams, meaning this baby had about 13 times the legal limit of alcohol in her system.
Though some reports claim that the baby was born with a level 23 times the legal limit. According to hospital spokesman Wojciech Zawalski: "The unborn baby was in severe danger of being poisoned to death.
"When he came out his heart was barely beating and he had 4.5g of alcohol in his blood."
Either way, it is an extreme amount
As of right now, doctors say that there are no immediate fears for the infant's life but they are concerned about how the child will develop.
The new mother could possibly face charges of endangering the life and health of a child, which is a crime that could result in a five-year prison sentence if convicted. Some reports claim that the mother can also face murder charges if the infant dies.
