Last night's episode of HBO's Game of Thrones featured a lot of development with some sparse nudity and just one action sequence right at the end. "Second Sons" was still a compelling episode, though. We even got the see the triumphant return of a drunken Tyrion Lannister during his awkward wedding to Sansa Stark. The focus of the episode, however, was on Daenerys and her attempt to win over a group of mercenaries known as the Second Sons. Luckily for her one of the mercenaries, Daario Naharis, falls for the Mother of Dragons. (SPOILERS to follow)
The main storyline that "Second Sons" featured was that of Daenerys and her army considering facing an army of sell-swords that had been hired by the town she hoped to conquer, Yunkai. Mero, better known as the Titans Bastard, runs this group of mercenaries. He is a ruthless and crude commander who says incredibly crass things to Daenerys during their meeting, and refuses to fight for her. Luckily, his lieutenant Daario Naharis is clearly leaning towards the Mother of Dragons throughout the whole episode. Eventually, Daario is chosen to murder Daenerys. As he sneaks into her tent, we learn that he has actually killed Mero and the other commander of the Second Sons, and swears his allegiance to Daenerys. He proclaims: "My sword is yours, my life is yours, my heart is yours."
Get ready for some sexual tension in the next season!
Some important side stories from last night focused on Gendry being taken to Stannis by Melisandre. We learn that Gendry is to be sacrificed for the God of Light. Melisandre shows Stannis that Gendry's blood (the blood of a king) is powerful by having leaches obtain some blood from him after she seduced him. Things are looking bleak for poor Gendry. Luckily, his Lady, Arya, seems to be going to her uncle's wedding. So perhaps she will finally be reunited with her brother and her mother and it is all thanks to the Hound!
Meanwhile, Tyrion and Sansa have their wedding as Geoffrey torments both of them throughout. During their wedding night, Tyrion says he won't sleep with Sansa unless she wants him to. Unfortunately, earlier Geoffrey threatens a rape scenario so Sansa is still not out of trouble yet.
And finally Samwell Tarley defends Gilly and her son from a White Walker using the Dragon Glass blade. We learn that, besides fire, this type of blade is the only thing that can kill the deadly creatures. Hopefully Samwell picked it back up after slaying the walker.
This episode felt more like a filler episode, but next week's "The Rains of Castamere" has been rumored to be a climactic episode.
