Gus Wenner is fresh out of college but just acquired one of the best jobs in the music industry today. The 22-year-old musician and Brown graduate is now the head of overall operations for Rollingstone.com, the website for the immensely popular music publication Rolling Stone magazine. Unfortunately this news has been veiled with accusations of nepotism because Gus' father Jann Wenner is the owner of Rolling Stone. This of course has many people asking if the young Gus deserves his new job.
According to an e-mail sent out to Rolling Stone staff members, Gus had been working with the website in a "re-launch re-design effort" and his performance warranted his new position. Jann's e-mail reads:
Dear all:
David Kang and I are very pleased -and I am very proud -to announce that Gus Wenner, after leading the re-launch re-design effort for our website, will now continue by heading up the overall operations of RollingStone.com.
Jann
Though it seems like Gus might be qualified, the incredibly fast rise to the top is clearly going to affect the rest of his career. Critics will always bring it up and there is just no way around such an appointment from you father. The music industry is all about "paying your dues" and the mentality of working for what you want, so when the most popular music magazine in history does something like this it feels like a slap in the face.
While at Brown, Gus Wenner performed in an alt-country band with fellow celebrity offspring Scout Willis (daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore). The two still perform in a group together called Scout + Gus in the New York City area, so it looks like Gus can make it into the Manhattan offices of the website for his new job. Hopefully this does not affect his band with Scout in a negative way.
You can check out Gus + Scout's website for some live videos that are hosted by RollingStone.com.
