Kendrick Lamar Says Molly Is No Good For Rap, K Dot Isn't Anti-Drug, Just Thinks It's Corny

As the reigning king of "mainstream hip-hop as an art form" arguments, Kendrick Lamar has a few choice words about rap's drug du jour. In an interview with MTV News, K-Dot called Molly (a slang term for MDMA, if you haven't left the cool underside of your rock for a bit) "not that cool," claiming the drug has led to a rash of unoriginal and corny songs. The man who ended his video for "B*tch, Don't Kill My Vibe" with the words "Death to Molly" wanted to make it clear that he's not anti-drug or even anti-trend, he just thinks Molly in particular has led to some lazy music (i.e. Tyga and his too-big-for-his-mouth teeth here.)

"I like trends, like in high-school we had the button-ups. You know Jay-Z did that," said Lamar. "sometimes you have trends that's not that cool."

"You have certain artists who portray that trend, who aren't living that lifestyle. It gets kind of corny after a while," said Lamar. "It's really about keeping hip-hop original and pushing away the corniness."

When asked about Molly's direct impact on hip-hop, Kendrick said it "waters the culture down" and added that "it's time to move on."

Kendrick Lamar's critically acclaimed mixtape Section.80 cemented him as a voice to be reckoned with in hip-hop before his sprawling Compton epic good kid, m.A.A.d. city shocked everyone and landed atop many best of 2012 lists.
