A strange turn of events happened in Jinhua, China, this weekend when a two-day-old baby boy was rescued from a sewage pipe. According to reports, the mother of the infant gave birth on Saturday and then called her landlord complaining of strange noises coming from the pipes. It is unclear if the mother flushed the baby on purpose or if the birth was unexpected.

According to a report by a police officer who wished to remain unnamed, "The woman was on the scene during the entire rescue process ... and admitted (she was the mother) when we asked her."

"We need further investigations to find out if she had any malicious intentions" before they decide whether the mother would be charged or not, he added. "The baby is very healthy now and can be released from the hospital."

The baby boy weighs about 5 pounds and was discovered with the placenta still attached.

This footage of the rescue was broadcast nationally overnight before more details of the unexpected birth emerged. The news of this incident triggered thousands of comments on the country's popular Weibo service, which is basically China's Twitter. These users were expressing positive wishes for the baby.

One user named If-Free stated that watching the rescue left her distraught.

"Seeing the little one wriggling and groaning as the pipe was torn apart bit by bit wrings my heart ... You've lived through the hardest moment in your life and your future will definitely be smooth," she said.

Though this story might seem unique, abandoned newborn children in China are not unheard of. Usually the mothers do not know they are pregnant or if the infant is a girl she would be abandoned due to China being a society that puts greater value on boys.

Further investigation into this specific situation is still underway.
