In last week's episode of NBC's Hannibal, we got to see Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) inch even closer to his breaking point as he was losing track of time in apparent blackouts. With "Trou Normand," we also got to enjoy Hannibal's friendship instincts kick in when he realizes his friend Will might be losing it due to the mounting homicide cases that could even be bringing him closer to capture. Will he break? Will Hannibal be there for him if he does? And what will Dr. Bloom do?
We open on a gruesome scene: a literal totem pole of dead bodies. Under closer observation, the victims were murdered over 4 decades, with the headpiece being the latest killing. Each aspect of the sculpture was intricate and meaningful according to Will who then steps into the mind of the killer, witnessing the final murder of victim Joel Summers.
Eventually, the first victim is identified as Fletcher Marshall who was killed in 1973. This man turns out to be the father of Summers who was put up for adoption after his parents were murdered. The murderer, who made most of the murders look like accidents, was identified and tracked down. Will and Jack find him waiting to be taken to jail, only Will tells him that his final victim was his own son. It turns out the killer had an affair with Marshall's wife and Summers was actually his biological son. "You didn't secure your legacy, you destroyed it," Will explains to the murderer.
Meanwhile, Will is losing track of time throughout the episode. At one point he is at the scene of the crime, then blinks and finds himself in Hannibal's office. Another instance he is giving a lecture then discovers himself alone in his classroom in the dark. Hannibal tries to calm him down, but ultimately knows that Will is suffering.
Also, Abigail Hobbs is back in the picture and wants to tell her story with the help of Freddie Lounds. Clearly Will thinks this is a bad idea, but she still wants to do it. She even digs up the body of the man she killed, Nicholas Boyle, to get passed her fear of the body actually being found. She was in control of the situation.
Will figures out that Abigail killed Nicholas and asks Hannibal about it who admits to hiding the body. Will won't go to Jack about it and is now an accomplice to the crime.
Will this add to the mounting deterioration of Will Graham's mental state?
