The Top 6 contestants on Season 4 of "The Voice" competed during Monday night's two-hour broadcast for spots in next week's semifinals. In an interesting twist, only one singer would be eliminated this week instead of the usual two.
The country music genre dominated much of the night as three of the six contestants belonged to Blake Shelton. Moreover, Michelle Chamuel (Team Usher) and Sasha Allen (Team Shakira) also took on country songs of their own Monday.
Each contestant sang two songs Monday night: a choice from his or her judge and a contestant's choice.
Holly Tucker sang Martina McBride's "When God-Fearin' Women Get The Blues." Blake told her in rehearsal that she needed to bring plenty of energy, but unfortunately she fell short. Usher commented that he wanted more from her performance.
Michelle Chamuel sang Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know" at Usher's behest and the judge again showcased his pride in his contestant. The performance started with a soft piano opening and built to a rousing, energetic climax for another solid performance from Michelle.
Blake assigned The Swon Brothers to sing Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muskogee" but they never really seemed to get behind the lyrics or connect with the song.
Amber Carrington took on Skid Row's "I Remember You" for Adam's choice and added a country twang to the hair band's track. The performance even featured an actual ring of fire on the stage.
Danielle Bradbery took on Pan Tillis' "Shake The Sugar Tree" at Blake's request. The performance was fine, but it was off-putting that the youngster could not connect with the more grown-up lyrics.
Finally, Shakira chose Carrie Underwood's "Before He Cheats" for Sasha Allen. The pop singer jazzed up the country star's song with some added instruments, including horns and organs.
Holly chose Rascal Flatts' "My Wish" and delivered a solid but not dazzling rendition. She unfortunately could be in danger of heading home this week.
Michelle took on a country song of her own in Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" and Usher even got Swift to show up during rehearsal. Michelle owned the song and grew more comfortable as it progressed. She managed to take a pop hit and transform it into an aggressive rock song.
The Swon Brothers chose Darius Rucker's "Wagon Wheel" (originally sung by Old Crow Medicine Show) and received praise from the judges, particularly their coach.
Amber elected to go with Patsy Cline's "Crazy" and delivered one of the best performances of the night. Adam's last remaining contestant definitely has a chance to appear in the finale.
Danielle chose Sara Evans' "A Little Bit Stronger" and turned in a better performance than Blake's choice earlier in the evening.
Sasha picked Aretha Franklin's "Ain't No Way" and powered through the song with strong vocals.
America's votes will eliminate one contestant during Tuesday night's results show.
