Matt Smith recently announced that he is hanging up his fez and leaving the Doctor Who universe at the end of 2013. Fans will say good-bye after the 50th anniversary special and during the Christmas special, when the new Doctor will be revealed. In order to celebrate Matt's run as the Eleventh Doctor, iTunes is now offering his debut episode "The Eleventh Hour" for free and discounts on seasons 5 through 7 until June 11. But the 50th anniversary celebrations have not slowed down with this sad news. In fact, Australia recently celebrated with a Vivid Sydney laser light show over the weekend!
In order to help celebrate the half-century of Doctor Who, Australia included a special presentation during its Vivid Sydney festival. A celebration of music, light and ideas, Vivid Sydney proved to be a perfect canvas for the tribute. Light projections showed The Doctor fighting Sontarans, Weeping Angels, and Cybermen along with other imagery from the iconic show. Check out a behind-the-scenes video of the light show right here:
Though Matt might be leaving, his old companion Karen Gillan already has her first big role since leaving Doctor Who earlier this season. The Scottish actress was just cast in a major role in Marvel's Gardians of the Galaxy. Though not much is known about the role, she will reportedly play a villain!
Also, the current companion Jenna-Louise Coleman recently sat down on the Nerdist podcast to discuss her role of Clara Oswald on Doctor Who. Check it out right here:
