Police and "Today" show security pulled out their guns urging the man to put the knife down. The man slit his writs, and was tackled down by NYPD and immediately received medical attention. The "Today" show anchors were pulled inside for the rest of the morning and no one else was injured. Because of the amount of blood, NYPD did not want to touch the man and used their feet to keep him down.

After addressing viewers on camera, Host Matt Lauer said "He was controlled by our security team out there. However, he did harm himself in some way, so he's now being attended to by medical personnel."

Lauer later tweeted, "All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks to our security team and the NYPD," and later, "Sorry, a man attempted to harm himself with a knife. He is under police control. In custody."

Lauer later thanked Security and the NYPD tweeting, "All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks to our security team and the NYPD."
