Johnny Manziel (aka "Johnny Football") accomplished more than most in his freshman year at Texas A&M. For one thing, the young quarterback won the Heisman trophy. Approaching his sophomore season, Manziel is now starring in a music video for country artist Granger Smith.
The video, for the song "Silverado Bench Seat," is pretty standard for the country genre. Manziel is joined by A&M receiver Ryan Swope as he drives around in a truck with a pretty girl. No reference is made to Manziel's playing at Texas A&M, although there is a scene where several small girls run up to his truck to ask for an autograph.
Smith graduated from Texas A&M in 2002 and has become a staple of the football scene at the school. The musician's 2007 track "We Bleed Maroon," a reference to the university's team colors, is popular at football games. Smith played at Kyle Field prior to the opening game of the 2012 season and the crowd raucously sang along with his single "First Yell."
Manziel became acquainted with Smith by reaching out through Twitter. When the musician played another show near the university, Manziel and his friends came onstage to lead the crowd in "We Bleed Maroon." Smith was coy about Manziel's vocal skills, complimenting his enthusiasm instead.
Texas A&M senior associate athletic director Jason Cook was quick to clarify that Manziel hadn't been paid for his participation in the video, which would have been a violation of NCAA policies. Smith knew what what he was doing, avoiding getting the star athlete in any trouble.
"I would be excommunicated from the Aggie community, for sure," he said.
Manziel has fashioned himself into a social media star as well. Some of his other celebrity interactions include hanging out with Lebron James and rapper Drake.
