Hannibal only has two episodes left in its first season and it looks like it is ready to go out with a bang. In tonight's penultimate episode entitled "Releves" Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) falls even deeper into madness and becomes the subject of suspicion in the FBI. Last week in "Roti," we saw Will at his breaking point so what will happen as he moves past that? Also, what does the FBI think of how he dealt with Dr. Gideon (Eddie Izzard)? (SPOILERS to follow)
"Roti" opens on the aftermath of a crime scene: a transport vehicle that was massacred by returning character Dr. Gideon. With Will's ability to place himself in the mid of the killer, we see just how the charismatic ex-surgeon escaped captivity to start his rampage. The FBI figures out that Gideon is leaving messages for the man that doctors convinced him he was: the Chesapeake Ripper.
The skilled surgeon leaves a gruesome trail of murdered doctors who had previously treated the psychopath, leading him to believe he was someone else. Now lost in the mindset of another person, Gideon is taking revenge on the ones who figuratively got into his head by physically getting into their organs.
Eventually, Gideon gets Freddie Lounds to write a story on her website that gets the attention of the Chesapeake Ripper (who we all know is Hannibal). With this, Hannibal does his regular copycat murder with his own twist, which leads Will and the FBI to the observatory. Hannibal kills a new victim in the same way that Gideon would, but cuts off an arm. This is reminiscent of how the arm of Miriam Lass was found in the observatory, so it is a direct message to Jack and his team.
The FBI gets to the observatory to find Lounds pumping air into Dr. Chilton, who just underwent some crazy Gideon surgery while still conscious. He somehow survives and last we hear he is in intensive care.
But while Jack and his team are inside finding Chilton and Lounds, Will manages to track down Gideon during a crazy hallucination sequence. Will believes Gideon is Garret Jacob Hobbs and brings him to Dr. Lecter. Hannibal of course continues to manipulate to psychologically fragile Graham into believing that nobody is actually with them and then Will starts to have a mild seizure. Then Hannibal lets Gideon escape and tells him where Dr. Bloom is.
When Will comes to, Hannibal leaves a gun and car keys out on the table knowing that he will take them to save Alanna. Hannibal is Will's puppet master.
Will tracks down Gideon who explains his motive and admits that he plans on killing Bloom. Graham shoots him in the head.
