John Mayer 'Paper Doll' Lyric VIDEO [WATCH]: New Single About Relationship with Taylor Swift Failure Set to Prancercise Viral Clip

John Mayer released a lyric video for his new single "Paper Doll" today (June 18). The clip, which plays off the viral video "Prancercise: A Fitness Workout," has started rumors that the song is about one of his famous ex-girlfriends. Could the track really be about Taylor Swift or even Katy Perry?

The song itself is John Mayer at his lightest. Though it's not quite a ballad, the slow-tempo track feels as though it was played simply using fingertips. The smooth, soft singing creates a calming effect. Though it's not a sad song per se, the track sounds full of a small yearning for something that didn't work out.

The lyrics to the song, which are featured in today's new video, are sparking rumors that the track may be a retaliation to ex Taylor Swift's song "Dear John." The infamous, biting song features lyrics such as "Dear John, / Don't you think I was too young to be messed with, / The girl in the dress cried the whole way home."

In "Paper Doll," Mayer seemingly fires back, though in more subtle, mature manner.

"You're like 22 girls in one, / And none of them know what they're running from, / Was it just too far to fall, / For a little paper doll?" Mayer sings in the chorus.

References to "22" (also a hit single from Swift) and different dresses that didn't work out make "Paper Doll" seem like an obvious fire back to Swift. It seems as though Mayer is implying that Swift was just too young to understand that sometimes a relationship doesn't work out, but there are bluer skies ahead eventually.

Mayer also shifts the blame away from him. Twenty-two girls in one could feasibly be hard for any one man to deal with, and that may have led to the couple's break up in 2009.

Of course, Swift isn't Mayer's only famous ex-girlfriend. Though less likely, "Paper Doll" could also be dedicated to Katy Perry, whose relationship with Mayer ended earlier this year.

In this month's issue of Vogue, Perry admitted that she's still "madly in love" with Mayer and the two only broke up because of their busy schedules.
