Episode 3 of "The Hero" begins as Darnell returns to the Hero Penthouse and informs the team of his failure to complete last week's Hero's Challenge. A few people wonder if he is telling the truth or if he just took the money.

Athena says she does not care that Shaun took the money.

The clues for the Team Challenge appear on the screen and they are "trek," "jungle" and "map."

Dave, Shaun and Lydia are in because they sat out last week. After some deliberation, Patty, Darnell and Athena join them.

Dave says he does not like that Athena and Shaun are bonding and he does not want to put them into the final three for this week's Hero's Challenge.

The six arrive at Devil's Beach and must reach an abandoned U.S. military battery. They each have a map and must navigate there, at which point three team members will enter. They have 30 minutes to complete the whole challenge. The Rock also mentions there might be snake.

The Rock pops out in a ghillie suit and scares the hell out of Patty. He offers he $35,000 to flip the final three. Whoever they choose to go in would actually go home, and vice versa. She cannot tell anyone about the switch if she takes the money.

When they all get there, they have 15 minutes to decide who to go in and the clock is running. Lydia asks if anyone got an offer, and four players raise their hands. As revealed a few minutes later, Athena took the money even though everyone suspected Shaun.

After some heated arguing, Lydia, Patty and Dave decide to go in, but thanks to Shaun taking the offer, they wind up going back home. Darnell, Shaun and Athena are entering the building. Everyone suspects Shaun but Athena admits to him and Darnell that she did it.

In the bunker is a case that they must bring to The Rock and they have 21 minutes to finish. As Shaun tries to enter, a giant snake sits in a nearby tree. Snakes are inside the narrow passageway, too, which doesn't sit well with Shaun.

It turns out the team has to measure the snakes to solve math equations in order to complete the challenge. Darnell took control and starts talking to the snakes. They do some quick calculations, but their math is wrong.

Back at the Hero Penthouse, Marty, Charles and Rachel are talking about the rest of the team and they see Dave, Lydia and Patty are angry when they walk in the door. They ask the non-challenge crew if they took any money and all say no. Eventually, they deduce that Athena did it.

At the challenge, the time starts running out, but they solve the puzzle. They open the box and bring the case outside to The Rock to win $10,000 for the Red Cross and to make the Hero's Challenge a little easier.

The Rock asks how things are back at the penthouse and warns them not to turn it into "Jersey Shore." They open the case to find a bunch of cold beer, which the four drink. Darnell, Athena and Shaun then return to a tense penthouse.

Shaun talks about the challenge but no one cares. Athena admits taking the money and Patty walks away angry. Dave blows up at Shaun and everyone argues as Athena just sits there. That is, until she snaps at Marty and Lydia (who calls her weak).

Athena and Shaun talk about how Darnell looks the best out of anyone in the house because he is a sympathetic figure with children, while the house cannot stand the two of them at the moment.

In the War Room, The Rock asks Patty how she felt when she heard someone took the money and she tells Athena she was hurt because she did not get a chance to face her fears and go into the snake-filled building.

The Rock asks Athena about her home life and she starts crying. She says her brother was bullied his whole life and she stuck up for him, and now she is in a house where everyone is breathing down her neck. She says taking the money for her family is more heroic than ridiculing and belittling someone.

Patty says she was only mad that she lied, not that she took the money.

Lydia and Athena continue to argue and Rock breaks it up. He talks about heroism sometimes means finding empathy and understanding why someone did what they did.

The final three give statements to the team. Shaun says he knows Darnell is going in for the second week in a row. Athena says the $35,000 could never have gone into the pot, but the $50,000 is "our money" and if she wins, it's going in the pot.

The team votes for Darnell for the second straight week. The Rock tells him to meet him at the Centennial Bridge.

Dave apologizes to Athena for his behavior, and Lydia says she does not hate Athena. Then she starts crying and says she felt bad for making Athena feel the way she did in light of her bullying story.

At the bridge, The Rock tells Darnell he has to climb up the inside of the 450-foot bridge tower and rappel down the outside. On the way down, he will see clues to a riddle that he must solve. He has 20 minutes thanks to the team challenge win instead of the usual 10.

He makes it to the top in 10 minutes and starts to rappel down the side of the tower. He gets the first clue "Where can you find" and the second "cities without people" within two minutes or so.

The third is "forests without trees" and the fourth is "streets without cars." Darnell keeps saying that riddles are always simple as he finds the fifth and final clue "oceans without water."

Darnell rappels down the side as The Rock calls him "Black Spider-Man" (last week it was Black Aquaman, or Blaquaman). Darnell makes it down with about 1:15 to go and sprints to the finish. The Rock re-reads the clues and Darnell gets it right away: a map.

He wins the $50,000 but before he can decide to keep it or not, The Rock hands him a phone with his wife and two daughters on the other end. Darnell starts crying and his daughter says she wants to be like him. He tells his wife about the challenge he just completed and tells her that he's taking the money.

In an interview, Darnell says he took the cash to get his family out of debt and some people will see his move as selfish, while others will say he did it for his family. But he says he cannot worry about that.

Back at the bridge, Darnell dances his way back to the penthouse with a bag filled with $50,000.
