A super moon comes once a year. A super moon is the largest full moon of the year and 2013's super moon is happening at 7:32am EST Sunday morning. This is a big event for many who want to take a look up into the sky and see a semi-rare event. It also may be a big day for those people who feel full moon's lead to strange behavior. According to NASA a super moon means the moon will be 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons. So will you be watching the 2013 super moon?
According to the Huffington Post, astrologer Richard Nolle coined the term "super moon." Huffington Post says a super moon is also known as a perigree moon and occurs "when a full moon lines up with the Earth and the sun at a specific point in its orbit, called the lunar perigee. That's the point at which the moon is nearest to Earth as it traces its elliptical path around our planet." The super moon won't be back again until August 2014.
While this could be exciting for many, a NBC News report notes that Bad Astronomy's Phil Plait says "you'd never notice the difference" between the super moon Saturday night/Sunday morning and a normal full moon. NBC News also notes how the tides will also be stronger than usual, but it shouldn't be anything to worry about. You can start looking for this year's super moon Saturday (June 22) night. Will you be checking out the 2013 super moon?
