Fans of AMC's "Walking Dead" should hopefully be aware that the show is based on the Robert Kirkman graphic novels of the same name and that it mostly takes its queues from the comic. It also takes some other, original direction though and with Kirkman as a producer of the show, it is all for the best. For instance, Kirkman has talked openly about some regret he made in the comics that he hopes won't be repeated in the show, but of course everything is up in the air. But some new set photos reveal a critical injury that was a big plot point in the comics that has yet come to fruition in the AMC series. Or is it a completely different injury? (SPOILERS to follow)
"The Walking Dead" centers on the main protagonist Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln in the television series) and in the comic he gets his hand cut off by The Governor. It was a crazy moment in the series and one that Kirkman has admittedly regretted.
"One thing I'm adamant about is I don't think that we should cut Rick's hand off [on television]. When I'm writing a comic book, I don't think about what I'm doing. I go, 'Oh, it'd be pretty cool if they cut his hand off right now. That'd be pretty shocking, right?'. Then I do it, and five issues later, I write 'Rick opens a can of beans' and then I look at the script and think 'He can't do that now'. I didn't even think that through."
After Kirkman said this, it seemed like we would not have to go through the lost limb of Rick Grimes. But new photos from the set of season 4 suggest that something bad has happened to Rick hand. Plus it's the same hand that he loses in the comic.
