R&B group TLC has rerecorded one of their biggest hits, "Waterfalls," to celebrate their 20th anniversary. While the news of a rerelease for such a milestone would be a pleasant surprise in general, fans of the '90s trio are angry because original member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes' verse in the track was rerecorded.
Lopes died in a car crash in Honduras in 2002.
For the rerecording of "Waterfalls," surviving members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas had Japanese pop star Namie Amuro feature for Left Eye's part.
The rerelease hit the web earlier this month, but is now circulating due to a TMZ story. According to the website, Lopes' family is upset because they didn't the song was going to be redone, and Lopes' sister Reigndrop feels as though the new version diminishes Left Eye's legacy.
"I did not know about it until a fan posted it online. I mean, it would have been nice if they would have given us a heads up before being surprised," she told TMZ.
Amuro is not a rapper like Lopes was, so the new version of "Waterfalls" features a partially whispered, partially badly rapped verse.
TLC apparently picked Amuro to guest on the song as a tribute to their dedicated Japanese fanbase.
Despite that, fans have expressed their displeasure in YouTube comments. "They should change their name to DFA (desperate for attention)," wrote one viewer. "Absolute garbage! Lisa has rolled over in her grave," another said.
TLC has some defenders, however. Top comments include an explanation that Watkins and Thomas don't own the rights to the original "Waterfalls." Another reiterates the fact that Amuro is a singer, not a rapper, and can't be expected to be as talented in that arena as Lopes was.
