Avicii 'could be the one' to take electronic dance music to a whole new 'level' with the premiere of his newest single ''Wake Me Up."
While the DJ's 2011 dance anthem, "Levels" helped to mainstream EDM a few years back, Tim Bergling's first song off of his upcoming album, 'TRUE,' can be considered anything but a typical house track. Avicii teased his new unexpected sound with a unique set during Miami's Ultra Music Festival back in March. It featured live instruments and a kind of country twang that left puzzled fans wondering if they were supposed to "do si do" rather than "beat the beat."
The wait for Avicii's highly anticipated new sound is finally over as the Swedish DJ released his first single entitled 'Wake me Up' on June 25th in the US (LISTEN below). His first debut record is set to drop on September 17th, according to Billboard, and the LP will be the first to be unleashed under a new partnership between PRMD Music and Island Records.
Along with Avicii's new relationship and sound also comes new featured collaborations on 'TRUE' with artists like Nile Rodgers, Aloe Blacc, Joakim Berg, Incubus's Mike Einziger and Audra Mae as opposed to the usual DJ collaborators like Nicky Romero, David Guetta, or Cazette. The DJ was relieved to discover that each collaborating artist brought an "open mind" towards electronic music, reports The Music Network.
"It's just been, for me, very interesting [as a] learning experience," the 23-year old told Radio.com. "I've been working with - instead of DJs, I've been working with musicians that come from completely different upbringings. Like, they've learned music differently and different ways of looking at music."
As for "Wake me Up," Dancing Astronaut describes the single as a "sui generis production among the dance music landscape as a harmonization of electronica, soul, bluegrass, and its own unique flare in between...featuring vocals from Aloe Blacc, folk guitar riffs, and a subtle dose of familiar chord stylings."
While this sound may differ from what originally leveled the Avicii name to the top of the EDM scene, Tim Berg is not too worried about fans' reactions to him stepping out of the box with 'TRUE.'
He explained to Billboard, "For me it will be successful if it resonates with people -- no matter how many," he said. "It's what I stand for, so whoever loves it loves what I love. That's what fans are to me."
"This is about me being true to my sound but also to my own influences and musical preferences," Avicii continued. "This album consists 100% of songs I personally love. It's true to me, true to my brand, true to Avicii."
Listen to "Wake me Up" below and let us know if you think the EDM DJ should take it back to his "Level" roots or if his new sound is truly refreshing. Look out for 'TRUE' to drop in September.
