Hip-hop is going through yet another revolution as the 10-year and some cases 20-year anniversary of some of the most prolific rap artist's have came and gone. Rap stars of the '80's and '90's paved the way for a the future of hip-hop, you know...the Drake's, the Kendrick Lamar's, The J.Cole's, The Big K.R.I.T's, and so fourth. However, beyond those new comers there is another underground layer of aspiring artists, those that where inspired by the 2000's decade of hip-hop artists.

Aspiring rapper Conley P, 24, was born in raised in the heart of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. His strict Christian upbringing often conflicted with the Lucifer's debauchery brewing on the streets. One listen to any Jay-Z or The Notorious B.I.G. song and it is evident that Conley could have easily been a statistic. Although he was and still is a product of environment, Conley's love of literature and poetry brought him seek a career as a rapper, while barely avoiding the street life that often comes along with that career choice.
"Brooklyn raised me, I mean It could have been different, I survived a gunshot wound at 13 years old," Conley said. "So beyond my family's Christian beliefs, in Bed-Stuy I could not escape rap and hip-hop, and besides hearing it, I saw what Jay-Z and Biggie were rapping about." Conley was hit with a stray bullet in his right arm, as a result of a common case of the wrong place at the wrong time. He spent 8 months in the hospital, and began writing rhymes with his left hand to past the time.
It wouldn't be until Lupe fiasco released his breakout song "Kick Push," when Conley P would come into his own as an artist and focus on his style. "Lupe Fiasco is the most inspirational lyricist I've ever heard, in my life," Conley P said. "When I first heard "Kick Push" I realized, Lupe wrote puzzles, lyrical labyrinths and stories with 100 lessons for each new listen." Conley connected with Lupe's poetic flow just as he had connected with Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, and Etheridge Knight as a child.

Listen to 'Kick Push:"
Lupe inspired Conley P's debut mixtape F.A.L.L. (Forever and Long Live) and the follow up freestyle mixtape Idelwild 826. Both LP feature an eclectic fusion of spacy sounds, electric, and soul music. On Idelwild Conley displays a sense of social awareness, much like his role model Lupe, Conley's verse tell a story. In between celebrating his black history and culture, he maintains hip-hop's elements of drugs, money, and women; however, he maintains an element of truth that is rare in the hip-hop industry.
On his song "Black Faces" he dives deep into his roots, exploring ancient time when blacks were queens and kings. However, a few tracks after that comes the song "A.G.E." a remix to Trinidad James "All Gold Everything," and Conley shows his street arrogant side. While he slays the beat taking about chicks, money, and time he could have spent in jail, there is also his signature touch with the mention of hierarchy and self-consciousness.

While Conley P is still on the rise, it is safe to say that he would make a nice addition to the mainstream hip-hop industry. As rappers such as Jay-Z, Common, and Lupe continue to pave the way for artists who want to maintain the element of poetic and conscious rap, Conley P definitely has a place in the industry. Idlewild 826 capsulizes Conley P's style displaying his versatile flow, and ability to transition from soulful songs, to tradition and old school hip-hop beats.
