By now you have probably heard of the big news regarding the British BBC science fiction show "Doctor Who." The upcoming "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special set to air this Christmas 2013 is likely to be a huge deal for fans of the television series. While there are conflicting feelings on the Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith ending his run and David Tennant reprising his leading role, the special is sure to please most fans. There are plenty of rumors and news coming out on the upcoming special, especially since the end of the "Doctor Who" season 7 finale, "The Name of the Doctor." There are some possible spoilers regarding John Hurt's unknown incarnation of The Doctor after a recent visit from Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall to the show's studios.
Screen Crush reports that costume designer Howard Burden recently described Hurt's character as a "dark Doctor." Burden gave some more information regarding Hurt's character. "There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn't see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap," Burden explained via Screen Crush. "He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor."
As of right now only Tennant's Tenth Doctor is scheduled to appear in the 50th anniversary special. However, there have been rumors that the Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston could be in the special as well.
CNET also reported that the 50th anniversary special of "Doctor Who" will mark the end of the BBC's 3D broadcasts. The network will reportedly take a three year break from 3D TV broadcasts following the "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary special.
